Scum and Villainy
Unwise deals. Blaster fights. High adventure among the stars.
Welcome to the world of Scum and Villainy.
Scum and Villainy is a Forged in the Dark game about a spaceship crew trying to make ends meet under the iron-fisted rule of the Galactic Hegemony.
Work with the members of your crew to thrive despite powerful criminal syndicates, warring noble families, dangerous aliens, and strange mystics. Explore the ruins of lost civilizations for fun and profit. Can your motley crew hold it together long enough to strike it big and insure your fame across the sector?
Scum and Villainy is a stand-alone RPG based on the Forged in the Dark game engine. In this book, you’ll find:
- A clear gameplay structure that puts the focus on the criminal undertakings of the crew. A session of play consists of a job followed by recovery, downtime projects, and advancement.
- Ship “character sheets” that allow for XP spends, upgrades, and leveling up alongside your characters.
- Crew advancement opportunities to reflect the change from a ragtag group barely flying in the black to a reputed crew that has built a name across the sector.
- Forged in the Dark tools to help keep the focus on the action of the job rather than the extensive planning needed to make it happen.
- Character and ship types to help create a unique and interesting crew at light speed.
May your ship fly true, and may your blasters never jam.

So, basically, Firefly? Shiny!
The three modes of play are basically Star Wars, Cowboy Bebop, or Firefly. So yeah.. freaking amazing!
When can we get our grubby hands on it!?!
Can’t find the price on your list (digital)
THIS LOOKS AMAZING!
Hi David, you can get the Digital version on DriveThru (once the final is out, you’ll get it too): http://www.drivethrurpg.com/product/198681/Scum-and-Villainy-Digital-Edition-Early-Access?term=scum+and+villainy&test_epoch=0
The physical version does not have a price yet (we need to see what the printing cost will be before we can price it).
It’s in final edits now, we’re hoping to have out by Gen Con.
I simply cannot wait to put a copy of this book on my shelf. It’s something I’ve been looking forward to for years now and I am *so* excited! 😀
Really looking forward to this…
I would describe the 3 modes as : Firefly, Blakes 7 and Killjoys…..although you certainly can do Star Wars,Fading SUns, r a host of other backgrounds without too much effort.
We’ve been playing a little of this over in the UK and so far we love it. I’m really looking forwrd to seeing a dead tree version.
Couldn’t be more excited! I’ve got the S&V material from the Blades Kickstarter and it is great! This truly deserves a beautiful hardcover book.
Any ETA on when pre-orders will be available? I’d like to get the pdf/hardcover combo when available. Thank you!
Hi Jeff, we’re shooting for June-ish right now for the pre-order, but it’s going to depend heavily on whether we can hit all our deadlines (there are many) and where we get in the printing queue with our manufacturer.
Thank you Sean, I’ll be check back in around June. Totally understand if there is some slip. I was thinking of picking it up on drivethrurpg, but really want to get the hardcover version when it comes out! Thank you to everyone at the hat for all of their great work!
Is there an official channel for questions & feedback? I bought the PDF and have noticed discrepancies between the full text and the player sheets. I asked on the G+ group but didn’t get any response.
I’m SO looking forward to starting a game up in the coming weeks, so I’d like to get these questions cleared up before we begin.
Hi Scott,
We had a corrections / typos form open for last month but as we’re getting ready for print we closed it. Can you email me seannittner at gmail and I’ll take a look?
Thanks,
Sean
This will be perfect for when we need to take a break from DnD and play as the Guardians of the Galaxy!
Yes, yes it will!
Kind of bums me out that this isn’t a fate world. 🙁
I guess you’ll have to settle for the other three dozen fate worlds we’ve put out, Bigwhitt. 🙂
Just finished playing our group’s first session of this tonight. It went AMAZINGLY well. Easily the most fun we’ve had playing an RPG in a very long time. Lots of memorable moments. A well timed snake-eyes on a clinch roll lead to some great cinematics. Can’t wait to get a physical copy of this!
I’m looking forward to trying this with my own bunch of scoundrels!
Hey everyone,
Our playgroup started playing Scum & Villainy recently and absolutely love it. So much so that I’ve taken the time to actually start publishing our sessions (see above posts where I gush about it more).
Our inaugural post is available at the following places:

REALLY looking forward to this getting its full release soon!
I see from the Product Availability Chart that this has a street date in early August. What’s the best way to pre-order?
The pre-order will be open on 6/29 and you can get it here! 🙂
I’m late to the party but in case anyone sees this while perusing the site and is debating getting this game, I can save you the trouble. Get it. Now. It’s FANTASTIC! Nothing else needs to be said.
Is this currently something that should be on store shelves, if I go to my FLGS?
For a few months now, yes! It was released to distribution for game stores at the same time as GenCon. Of course, your local store may need to be told by you that they should order it…
Are there plans to create PDF forms from the character/ship sheets? It would be great for pre-gen con games and generally just looking nicer – my handwriting can get rough at times. 🙂
Is there a dedicated online community for S&V? I’m looking to GM it for friends next week and I had some questions re game mechanics.
The Google+ warnings about that platforms imminent demise has me shying away from the BitD community there. Incidentally, was the Hegemony based off of Google? Asking for a friend.

I just bought Scum & Villainy, and the book says to visit http://offguardgames.com/scumandvillainy for character sheets and other references, but offguardgames.com doesn’t exist. I couldn’t find offguard games on Facebook either. Halp! I want to play this game, but it sure would be swell to have character sheets and stuff. Why didn’t you put them in the book itself, like EVERY OTHER ROLEPLAYING GAME?
Hi Steve,
Sorry about that. The ogg website is under construction now, but we do have all those downloads available here: https://www.evilhat.com/home/scum-and-villainy-downloads/
We started a Facebook Group for Fans of Scum and Villainy. Join the group and Let’s discuss this great game!

Hey there,
Here’s a great review of Scum & Villainy my friend wrote.
https://goblinbros.com/scum-villainy-review/
Nice game!
I was wondering, is there any blank Ship Sheets anywhere??
Have you looked at the Downloads page linked here? https://www.evilhat.com/home/scum-and-villainy-downloads/
fred I have and there are no blank ship sheet.
There are definitely blank ship sheets starting on page 13 of the “all sheets” file.
fred that is not a blank ship sheet, it’s the Stardancer ship sheet.
I’m talking about a blank ship sheet for making ones own ships, like if I wanted to make my own shuttle type, or my own freighter type, blank so one can write ones own Special Abilities, Crew/ship upgrades, contacts, add a picture of ones chosen ship, and so on.
Are there any plans for expansions to this game at all? For instance, Explorer type ships used to go poking around in the Black, diggin’ up ancient Ur sites, or a Corporate model where the crew are more interested in making their money around the normal legal requirements or the Hegemony, even if that means working with shady types on occasion.
Will there be more material about possible Xenos races, or details for engineered and manufactured lifeforms (androids, clones, golfs, etc.)?
@Esben C.- Something like this? https://i.imgur.com/ryDhiCI.jpg
@John Redican, bingo that is exactly what I meant 🙂
@John Redican
I have been tinkering around with an expansion idea for a while! We have one planned, but just haven’t had bandwidth *yet*. We will absolutely let you know as soon as we have more to present – check out @offguardgames on Twitter or our website for announcements in this vein.
I’m just starting a new campaign with a group of friends, but one of them didn’t feel any of the playbooks suited the kind of character he’d like to play as, which would be a Mastermind in the style of Charlie from Charlie’s Angels, Daisuke Aramaki from Ghost in the Shell, or Devon Miles from Knight Rider.
In response I’ve drawn up the following playbook to represent a character who most of the time wouldn’t be physically present during heists, but whose influence would be felt far more during the flashbacks and during downtime and I would very much appreciate any feedback people would be willing to offer, particularly with what items they’d have access to..
Mastermind
Starting: Money Where Your Mouth Is – May use Cred as well Stress to pay the cost for Flashbacks when not physically present on a mission.
Expert Help: May call on the assistance of employees to add +1d to any Action Roll but step up the danger of the roll when you do so (Controlled rolls become Risky, Risky rolls become Desperate. May not be used on Desperate rolls.)
Embezzlement: Gain an extra +1 personal Cred from any successful mission, but gain 1 Debt on any failed mission.
Golden Ticket: Whenever you generate a Gambit during a Flashback you may choose to take it as Cred instead. This bonus Cred may only be used during the current mission, and if not spent is lost once the mission is complete.
Married To The Job: You never become Lost when Overindulging a Vice.
Double Talk: When attempting to Acquire Assets during Downtime you may spend 2 Stress to reroll a die, but must accept the second result rolled. This ability may be taken multiple times for each Acquire task, with the Stress cost being paid each time, but each die may only be rerolled once.
Personnel Resources: You get an extra Downtime activity to dedicate towards a Long-Term Project as long as you are in a safe location with access to additional personnel.
Legitimate Business: You may Lay Low in the same system you are attempting to reduce Heat in, and if you do you gain +1d as you attempt to negotiate directly with your pursuers.
