The Dresden Files RPG. More fun than riding an undead dinosaur through the streets of Chicago, and that’s saying a lot.
Far as I know, he does not.
Well sir, in Storm Front he explains that most potions start t sour and lose potency. They are usually no good for more than a week. The magical implements that hold a steady enchantment are extremely costly and difficult to make. As he is a poor private investigator, who is always is having to worry about paying rent, these are out of his reach. In fact he usually barely escapes because he uses his brain to reason things out. He uses magic to support his intelligence instead of the other way around.
I would wonder what an actual video game adaptation of the series would look like, but when you think about it, the game or games would probably be pretty poor Quality
Not entirely, think back to playstation one. The Blood Omen format would fit this series perfectly. Although, being today’s video game market it would probably be dumbed down so that 6 year olds could play it easily.
Having never played FATE until the recent FATE Core printing, I was wondering how much difference there is in the Dresden files based on the previous edition? Is there plans of publishing an updated version?
I ask because I recently saw vol 1 & 2 of Dresden files at a local half price and was curious if it is worth buying it if there is one planned to come out later. I want to play the game but not if the two system will mess my fragile mind up with rule similarities (but different) LOL
Hi William,
Each incarnation of Fate stands on its own, so while we keep developing the game, there is no plan to release new editions of any of our products. Dresden Files Accelerated is being developed now, but that isn’t a new version of DFRPG, it’s a Fate Accelerated Implementation designed to be fast and sleek, but not as detailed as DFRPG. (It’ll also be at least another year before it comes out.)
well then that settles it… hopping back in the car to pick up those books at half price. 🙂
Good call!
I can’t believe this just occurred to me, but why are the case files (e.g. Neutral Grounds or Night Fears or Hocus Focus) only on Drivethrustuff ?
Why aren’t they available on the same page as the character sheets ?
I mean, they are just pdfs, right ?
Ok do I need to read the other rule books or should I just start with the dresden books?
What other rule books are you talking about?
To Todd H.
The Dresden Files RPG is self contained. You do not need to read any of the Fate Core books in order to play Dresden.
I assume that is the gist of your question.
You only need “Your Story” for the rules to play. “Our World” is more of a monster mannual, although it is very helpful for examples of rules in play.
As for the Dresden Novels by Jim Butcher, it helps to read them, but is not necessary.
Fred, Please let me know what the latest news is on the release of the “Paranet Papers” and any other Dresden RPG material. Very anxious to make the purchase and devour the info. FYI – it is kind of like waiting for a LucasArts film to be released though.
Hi Race,
Check out our project status page: http://www.evilhat.com/home/project-status/
I am new to both FATE and DFRPG. Though, I do read the books religiously.
I am currently reading the RPG books. But, I am a kinesthetic learner. Thus, I to get in the game and royally fubar my character in order to get a feel for the practical mechanics.
I live in the KC area and am interested in either sitting in on an existing game in my area or hosting a small game with more experienced players.
Is the source book available yet? Or do we just use FATE core?
Hi Don. Dresden Files uses it’s own implementation of Fate, which is included in Your Story. No additional produces are needed. The sourcebook Paranet Papers will be advancing the timeline of the novels (through Changes) as well as expanding some rules on Spellcasting, but won’t change the core rules mechanics.
After much hype and seeing all the awards it’s won I got the first and second book and some fudge dice. I am an old second edition d and d player and a player of palladium games. Will this be a hard system to learn and in the book it said come here for printable character sheets (www.dresdenfilestpg.com) and I was directed here and can’t find the print outs . Is it because I’m on mobile ?
Hi Louis,
If you’re comfortable with the intricacies of 2nd Edition, Fate (the engine of Dresden Files) should be no problem to pick up. Here’s a link to the current download page where you can find character sheets: http://www.evilhat.com/home/dresden-files-rpg-downloads/
One of Mac’s brews and a Whopper? I know Dresden likes Burger King too, but he always gets a steak sandwich when he’s at Mac’s. Coke and a Whopper sounds more like the right mid for Burger King food.
My group has put together a Dresden Files podcast for anyone that is interested in giving it a listen. I would suggest starting at Episode 1

I am thinking of buying the rpg and am wondering if regular six sided dice instead of fudge dice?
Hi Terry,
It’s not as easy to read but you can treat 1-2 as a “-“, 3-4 as a blank, and 5-6 as a “+” and use normal six siders.
Sean
If you have a way to mark the Dice with different colors I would suggest marking 1-2 a color and 5-6 a color. Like Sean said, it is hard to read normally and I found it rather cumbersome to have to always change the numbers to “-” or “+” in my head. I found color coding made it a lot easier until I got my own dice.
You could also use d3’s if you have any for the same thing. 1= -, 2 = nothing, 3 = +.
Other than that I will say that you will really love the system. I enjoy Fate and I especially like Dresden Files.
Thnx fellas… I may just buy the dice enyhow lol. Much apprreciated.
Is there a good landscape quick reference sheet available to use as a GM Screen for Dresden Files RPG?
I just wanted to say that today my longtime group started character creation for a game of the Dresden RPG. Only two of us know the setting at all (the other person in the group has only read to Grave Peril) but we had a blast with the phases. It was about a 5 hour session with no stats or dice rolls, but it was so fun.
That is great. Character and city creations is one of my favorite parts of the Drrsden Files Fate system. I knew nothing about Dresden Files until that first game, and it convinced me to start reading the books.
How did I not know about this?! Must buy.
It’s a mystery! We published the Dresden Files RPG vols 1 & 2 in 2010 — volume 3 is coming very soon. 🙂
We are going to start playing soon, so excited!!! ^^
I played d&d and pathfinder but never the Dresden files. Big fan of the books read them all and I’ve seen the show. I’m interested in the system and I’d like to find a group to play with in the Dallas tx area. I think I’ll go to the local gaming store and check it out.
I luv dresden. Plz plz concentrate on Harry stories they’re better
Love the books! Looking at possibly joining a group in DFW area. Hey Bob Christian, I live east of Rockwall, did you ever get a game going?
Is the DFRPG completely different than the Dramatic Live Role Play?
I have not played either so I no nothing of these games but have been reading the books for awhile & I Love them!
COMPLETELY different.
The Fate System Toolkit mentions a cuter way to convert regular six-sided dice into Fate (Fudge) dice.
Take some regular white dice with black pips and take a black marker. Connect the dots on the 4’s and 6’s to make squares, those are your blank faces (0). Connect the dots on the 2’s and 3’s to make a diagonal line, those are the “-” faces. And connect the dots on the 5 to make a diagonal “+” sign. Draw a diagonal “+” sign of the same size over the 1. You now have Fate Dice!
