Fate Core on Tabletop!

Have you seen it? Fate Core is on Tabletop, and it’s a gorgeous thing of gorgeousness! Wil, Ryan, Felicia, and John really put on a masterclass on how to play and run Fate, and we couldn’t be more grateful. But you don’t have to trust us, because you can watch it for yourself. Trust us on one thing, though: it’s worth watching until the end. #boneknife #epicrpgmoments

If you’re here looking for Fate related resources, we’ve got them!

Now that we’ve gotten the business out of the way, can we get to the squealing?! I lost track of how many times Fred and I (“I” being Carrie) mouthed “holy crap,” or some variation of the above, while they were shooting. Neither of us had ever been to anything like this before, and we had no idea what to expect. But, just in case you’re ever invited to attend a filming of Tabletop, here’s what to expect:

Holy crap, craft services is awesome. I should have taken a picture of the table of delectable food, but I was too busy lying on it and trying to claim it all for my own.

The set was a beautiful thing, but honestly? I was a bit distracted by the random set pieces stored in the corners of the soundstage. About twenty feet behind Ryan Macklin was a retro spaceship interior set, all in white, with flowy psychedelic curves. I may have walked onto it, pushed a button, and said “Boop!”

THIS IS WHERE THE MAGIC HAPPENS

THE BACK OF FRED’S HEAD, HARD AT WORK

They parked Fred and me behind the director, where we could see all of the monitors as well as the action on set. And they gave us headsets, so we felt incredibly official. At times, Fred was called in to help edit some material (like Wil’s rules summary at the beginning of the video), and he helped keep an eye out for rules moments that might need a little extra explanation in post production, although Ryan did such a great job of that and mostly freed us up to whisper “holy crap” at each other. In the meantime, I took lots of pictures and talked businessey things with the fine folks behind Geek and Sundry and Tabletop, who are beyond talented and awesome.

OFFICIAL CONSULTATION BETWEEN TAKES

(REALLY, THEY’RE TALKING ABOUT SOMETHING GOOFY)

OFFICIAL CARRIE HEADSET FACE

Let’s be honest—we had high hopes and expectations when we went out there. The experience exceeded them. Wil was one of the most talented, kindest people we’ve ever met. Felicia is hilarious and kept cracking us up with her Peaceface voice. We’d like to carry John around in our back pockets to help generate aspects and tell us funny anecdotes about his TV writing during breaks. And Ryan, as always, set the gold standard of GMing and was so easy to talk to. We ended the day equal parts exhausted and delighted.
