We’re big fans of local game stores here at Evil Hat. Retailers work hard every day as an essentially unpaid sales force for our games—for everybody’s games. That’s the sort of thing that makes us sit up, take notice, and figure out how we can make things more awesome for them.
Evil Hat took its time coming to distribution, but when we did we made sure to bring a rock-star, award-winning RPG to the party in the form of the Dresden Files RPG. We pioneered the retailer-supporting Bits and Mortar alliance, eliminating concerns about the impact of PDF sales on brick & mortar businesses. Whenever possible we’ve done what we could to make it clear that we see retailers as some of our best, strongest allies in a changing marketplace.
Evil Hat has been a small fish for a long time, albeit a small fish that knows how to make a big splash. Game stores everywhere have stepped up for us, supporting our games and showcasing our wares for an increasingly broader and more diverse set of gamers. And they did this even though our discounts through distribution were on the short side, higher than is typical in the industry.
Well, it’s time for us to pay our retailers back. We’re a bigger fish now!
And so, effective September 1st of this year, we are moving to the industry standard discount level with all of our distributors. We’ve already talked to all of them about this and confirmed that this means that our improved discounts will pass on to game stores everywhere. We’re doing this in advance of our Fate Dice release later that month, and before the second wave of the Fate Core product line — the Fate System Toolkit, Fate Worlds books, and the much-anticipated Atomic Robo RPG — sees release later this year.
As Evil Hat continues to mature you’ll see us continuing to look at how we can better support our retailer partners. This new, improved discount level is a big step. But it’s only a first step. Stay tuned in the coming year as we work to bring your favorite store even more!
